No one could have predicted in the late ’90s that social media would evolve into the global force it is today. Across every continent, in every circumstance, people use it day and night to connect, express, and mobilize. The words we choose, the actions they inspire, and the ripple effects they create are what brought this panel together.
Social media transcends boundaries. It bridges generations, cultures, faiths, genders, and socioeconomic divides. But with such extraordinary reach comes a pressing question: How do we harness this powerful tool for the greater good of humanity and of our planet?
We often say we know how to use it. And to some extent, we do. We claim to understand its risks and pitfalls. But do we truly grasp the depth of its influence?
As Peace Leaders, we must recognize that social media holds the potential to educate, to unite, and to heal. Our responsibility is to ensure that the stories we share are rooted in truth. Because yes, social media can be a force for peace.
Our panel believes this wholeheartedly. And we hope you’ll leave this conversation inspired to explore further, to ask deeper questions, and to help your communities use social media not just to connect, but to bridge divides and build understanding.
If you would like to continue the conversation after the conference, or become part of the Social Media 4Peace project, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

Join our lovable pups, as they navigate the world of social media in this fun and engaging cartoon-style book for kids and families! Designed for different age groups, this book explores how social media can connect families and communities while emphasizing individual and shared responsibilities. Through playful stories and relatable lessons, children and the entire family learn safe and positive online habits, helping them become responsible digital citizens - just like Shadow, Noel, Maya and Barty!
My name is Shadow and I’m a Siberian Husky. I follow my human family members everywhere and am their protector. I also get a lot of treats and pets by doing this. I am the wise alpha leader of this group. Like a typical husky, I have lots of energy. I like to play and take walks. I can even learn new tricks at the ripe old age of 84 (that’s 12 in dog years). Just last week, I learned how to get my own ice out of the ice maker from the fridge. I don’t typically howl (talk in your language) like many huskies. Instead I use my voice when needed to give warnings or to convey an urgent need or danger.
As the eldest member of the group, I believe that being an EI pack member is the most important aspect of sharing information on the internet. As the protector, I will give you tips and tricks for staying safe, making friends, and knowing when to use your voice to stand up for yourself. Our leadership for peace team works together to make sure that your internet experiences are positive, peaceful, and empowering. I am always lurking in the shadows to make sure that you can shine online.
Hi everyone, I’m “Noel” an IGGY or Italian Greyhound. I LOVE people! I love to hang out with my family, watching and investigating the world with them, and of course I LOVE pasta!
I'm a 'sight hound', which means I watch intently when I find something interesting. As I watch, I try to better understand and to learn about that which is fascinating me at that moment. Once I figure out how to engage with it, whether positive or negative, then I decide to share with others what I've discovered.
The most important thing is to understand that sharing information has a lot of responsibility. And since I am a very responsible IGGY, I need to be very certain that what I share is factual, and truthful information. So, I do a lot of ‘sniffing out’, what you humans call vetting and researching.
For me, being a 'Positive Influencer' is very important. Making sure that what I share with others will lead to positive discoveries.
I'm Barty, our pack's resident Online Safety Advocate from South Africa. I love the internet and social media, and am very fascinated by how it brings information and people from all over the world together. As an Online Safety Advocate, my job is to help keep vulnerable people, of all ages, safe on the internet through education and awareness raising as well as through policy and law reform.
My name is Maya. I’m a 12-year-old wise pup who cares deeply about people making responsible choices on social media. From reminding teenagers not to bully their friends, to encouraging parents to avoid posting when they’re feeling too emotional on a topic. I just want to help everyone keep their online world kind and thoughtful.
I consider myself a "sage" because I’ve seen enough to know that wisdom isn’t about being perfect. It’s about guiding others with patience, balance, and care. My role is simply to remind you to pause, reflect, and choose responsibility first.
