Art Transforms Conflict addresses communication and conflict transformation needs through training in areas such as creative communication, mediation, youth engagement, intercultural dialogue and compassionate communication methods. We offer customized programs to communities and groups seeking to develop effective and sustainable communication, change, and conflict management skills. Our objectives include:
Conflict is inevitable and if not managed quickly and effectively can escalate into more severe conflicts. This training equips participants with the skills and tools to better manage conflicts they may be directly involved in or to act as a neutral, third-party mediator in order to help manage other people’s conflicts. Customized role-plays and exercises that reflect local culture are developed as part of this training segment
Empathic non-violent communication provides an effective method to get to the root of violence, pain and conflict peacefully. By examining the unmet needs behind what we do or say, empathic non-violent communication helps to reduce hostility, heal pain and strengthen relationships. It teaches us to request what we want instead of what we don't want, and motivates people to respond out of respect rather than fear or obligation.
Strategic arts-based methods can provide people with the opportunity to discover and use different lenses to view conflict issues. Finding similarities where they only saw differences, empowerment where they only found failure, dialogue instead of violence. Participants creatively explore conflicts through social, cultural and community-based concepts, encouraging transformation through strategic arts-based methods including role play, improvisation, writing and other culturally-appropriate artistic expressions.
